After the Tornado
In the aftermath of a tornado, safety needs to be foremost in your mind. Surviving the tornado, itself, is only half the battle. Downed power lines, gas leaks and damaged property all pose potential hazards after the storm has passed. While you may want to quickly assess your property’s damage, it is important to do so in a prudent manner.
Immediately following the storm, the initial priority should be assisting the injured and keeping everyone safe. First, check yourself for injuries. Make sure you can move all your limbs, and feel around for blood. Sometimes people do not immediately notice an injury. Once you are sure you didn’t sustain any significant injuries, see if anyone around you did and needs help.
After checking for injuries, make sure there are no additional hazards nearby. Look around for:
- downed power lines
- gas pipes
- hanging objects overhead
Stay clear of any downed power lines and suspended objects. If you see any valves on gas pipes, turn them off. With the safety of everyone around you ensured, now you can cautiously check your property for damage. Look for structural damage, and continue to keep an eye out for electrical or gas issues. Take lots of pictures during your initial assessment and all through the cleanup process.
